Project Plaistow Sub-station

Replace asbestos roof sheeting

As part of Asset Performance & Capital Delivery (APCD), London Underground contracted Spoortech Ltd to renew the Plaistow Substation roof. the existing roof covering was leaking, contained asbestos and required removal by our specialist supply chain.

The works would require a complete internal crashdeck below the roof and above the sub-station equipment, the crashdeck would need to be water tight and air tight. An external weather tight roof and fully encapsulated external scaffold was also installed to keep the equipment dry and free of dust.

The Challenge

The freedom of design allowed us to undertake a value engineering exercise that reduced the programme by months and eliminated a number of risks. Spoor-tech were the principal contractor and principal designer and design control was essential to bettering the programme.

The internal and external scaffold structures were joined with cantilevered beams through the platform side wall, and removed the need for platform structures, hoardings and passenger disruption.

The full encapsulation allowed for 24/7 working above an operational sub-station and passenger rail platform

The roof mounted vents were replaced with permanent ventilation fans and eliminated potential water ingress from the new roof penetrations.

Innovation

Roof sections were assembled at ground level and lifted into place during Engineering Hours, the need for a crane was eliminated by using our bespoke heavy lift lorry with a fly jib attachment.

This minimised vehicle movements on a congested site and allowed flexibility of placement.

Partners

The works required co-ordination with multiple stakeholders and booking access required UKPN, London Underground and council planning processes, and all stakeholders have been satisfied that our systems and procedures ensure the highest adherence to all parties' procedures

The improved programme and elimination of trackside structures resulted in a project saving that allowed further opportunity works to be undertaken.

The use of our approved and tested supply chain ensured that decisions were timely and effective and planning was centralised, bettering the programme and delivering the project safely and right first time.
