Job Description:

We are a civil engineering contractor who are looking to add to our commercial team due to a successful work winning period for a major rail client. We offer the opportunity to work on some of the most exciting infrastructure projects in the UK, with a proven ability to develop staff with a tried and tested progression programme. We are looking to recruit a Quantity Surveyor to join our team in Purfleet.

What you’ll be doing

As our Quantity Surveyor, you will manage the day-to-day commercial control, reporting and management of multiple projects from award up to final account. This opportunity will give the successful candidate the opportunity to work on challenging IP and Framework contracts, managing schemes from cradle to grave. Reporting into the Commercial Lead you may be responsible for multiple projects at one time, or one larger scheme. 

  • Set profitability targets with the team, develop procurement strategy, and regularly produce financial progress reports
  • Timely procurement, negotiation, and administration of subcontracts in accordance with procurement strategy
  • Secure the best possible (value and timing) payments from the client in order to maximise cash flow
  • Ensure that payments are applied for and received in accordance with the contract
  • Make sure that the client is always aware of our financial and commercial expectations
  • Ensure the timely release of bonds and retention monies
  • Monitor progress against programme (including subcontractors) in support of the site management
  • Undertake preparation and agreement of valuation/final account to ensure recovery of full entitlement in accordance with the contract
  • Participate in regular risk reviews and problem solving
  • Ensure timely compliance with contractual obligations and provide advice and guidance to the team as necessary
  • Participate in all necessary dialogue to make sure that our commercial interests are always properly considered
  • Influence and contribute in resolution of all disputes that have a commercial impact 
  • Supply chain management and payment
  • Support the PM and Commercial Manager to manage projects through the entire project lifecycle
  • Prepare estimates, cost plans and tender documentation using various forms of measurement and contracts
  • Be proficient in measurement for schedules of works and bills of quantities production
  • Manage and prepare both tender and contract documentation
  • Support and input into procurement and tendering processes and evaluation/award of contracts
  • Prepare and agree interim valuations with contractors and issue recommendations for payment
  • Pricing variations/compensation events throughout the duration of the contract and provide cost advice
  • Price and prepare monthly financial reports and cashflow forecasts throughout the duration of contracts and provide general post contract cost management and control
  • Provide input into the financial aspects of change management
  • Carry out re-measurement of quantities with contractors if necessary and prepare and agree final accounts and claims
  • Administer and/or provide advice on contracts, typically the JCT, NEC or bespoke client forms of contract

Requirements:

What we look for

  • Is Degree qualified in a Quantity Surveying / Construction Management or related course (or equivalent relevant experience)
  • Ideally holds Professional membership with a recognised and relevant Professional body, i.e. Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors
  • At least 4 years’ experience in the commercial arena
  • Has worked in a rail environment and been responsible for, commercial performance using NEC forms of contract
  • Experience managing multiple sites
  • Experience using A-Site and/or 4Projects
  • Experience working on large-scale Rail/Infrastructure projects
  • Advise on contract procurement routes, selecting appropriate contractors and professional teams
  • Identify reasons for delayed progress and create practical solutions to resolve
